X-ray-induced Dissociation of H2O and Formation of an O2-H2 Compound at High Pressure

چکیده
In this work we used inelastic X-ray scattering to study the high-pressure behavior of H2O. At lower pressures and low temperatures, X-ray Raman spectroscopy (XRS) is used for investigating water, ice Ih, ices II and IX. At higher pressures we discovered new radiation chemistry in the H2O system. A new compound composed of molecular oxygen and hydrogen was formed after X-ray irradiation of the ice VII sample. This surprising result opens new avenues for radiation chemistry research and studying molecular interactions in the O2-H2 system. Materials Physics

Degradation of Alkali-Based Photocathodes from Exposure to Residual Gases: A First-Principles Study
Photocathodes are a key component in the production of electron beams in systems such as X-ray freeelectron lasers and X-ray energy-recovery linacs. Alkali-based materials display high quantum efficiency (QE), however, their QE undergoes degradation faster than metal photocathodes even in the high vacuum conditions where they operate. The high reactivity of alkali-based surfaces points to surfa...
متن کاملStability of lithium hydride in argon and air.
The oxidation behaviors of LiH under a high purity argon atmosphere, an argon atmosphere with some O2 and H2O impurities, and ambient air at both room and high temperatures, are investigated using a variety of analytical instruments including X-ray diffractometry, thermogravimetry, mass spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy, and specific surface area analysis. The oxidation behaviors of th...
متن کاملTHE ACTIVATION OF CARBON DIOXIDE AT A MAGNESIUM (1 00) SURFACE THE ROLE OF OXYGEN TRANSIENTS
X-ray photoelectron and high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopic (XPS-HREELS) studies have shown that the adsorption of carbon dioxide at Mg(100) surfaces at 80K is followed by a dissociative reaction leading to the formation of a metastable surface carbonate above 80K. The formation of a carbonate species is proposed to proceed through oxidation of C0 (g) by an active oxygen su...
متن کاملSuppression of X-ray-induced dissociation of H2O molecules in dense ice under pressure
We investigated molecular dissociation induced by 10-keV X-ray irradiation in dense ice at pressures up to 40 GPa at 300 K. The dissociation yield estimated from the oxygen K-edge X-ray Raman spectra, showed that the molecular dissociation was enhanced up to 14 GPa and gradually suppressed on further compression to 40 GPa. The molecular dissociation was detected for a rather narrow pressure spa...
متن کاملIntegrated In Situ Characterization of a Molten Salt Catalyst Surface: Evidence of Sodium Peroxide and Hydroxyl Radical Formation
Sodium-based catalysts (such as Na2 WO4 ) were proposed to selectively catalyze OH radical formation from H2 O and O2 at high temperatures. This reaction may proceed on molten salt state surfaces owing to the lower melting point of the used Na salts compared to the reaction temperature. This study provides direct evidence of the molten salt state of Na2 WO4 , which can form OH radicals, using i...
